Many of you have told us that a Better Life is:
- Being close with family (particularly our grand-kids)
- Staying in touch with friends and involved in the community
In other word's social! There's all this new technology that can make it easier to be "in-the-know" on what our grand-kids are up to, reach out to old friends and find activities or have our voice heard in our local community. This section of Oxy-View.com is dedicated to making all that technology a little easier to understand.
The purpose of Oxy-View's Social Senior's Media Site is to offer our friends the opportunity to learn about the Social Media network and to share information with their friends. This section introduces you to the basics of Facebook, YouTube and basic search engines like Google,Yahoo, Bing and others. To jump to a particular section, click on one of the logos on the right.

This section provides a starting point for learning more about Internet safety. While the various dangers of the Internet can be intimidating, there is a lot of information out there to help protect yourself and minimize the probability of any negative experience. Before reading from the experts, here are just some general tips to keep in mind:
VIRUSES
• It's a good idea to run Anti-Virus Software. You can learn more about this topic by clicking Here. You can also learn more by exploring the links later in this page. NOTE: If you download a "Free Trial," be aware of how long the trial will last. Many including MacAfee bombard you with pop-up advertisements after the free trial version of the software has expired if you don't purchase it at that point.
SCAMS & IDENTITY THEFT
• The more details about yourself that you post on the Internet when creating accounts on Social Media (e.g. facebook), web-hosted Email (yahoo, gmail) or other online profiles you create for yourself, the more information "cybercriminals" have to use to attempt identity theft or approaching you with a scam. It's best to keep this in mind when creating profiles. You may want to use a false date of birth, or not include your real last name. Unless you are shopping on line or ordering information to be sent to you. You should almost never need to enter your full true address and should never make it available for the general public to see online or on any profile.
eCOMMERCE (Shopping Online)
• If you are shopping online, be sure that the website address has an “s” at the end of the http at the beginning (it should add this after you type the website address in and hit enter). For example,“http://www…. " does not have a secure connection for financial transactions. However, “https:/www…” should be a secure server. The “s” stands for “secure.
Note: This means that particular website is hosted on a secure server, this does NOT mean that your Internet connection to the internet in general is secure.

As you use any social media, you may want to keep the following in mind:
- Some social media sites, such as Facebook, maintain in their user agreement that they own the copyrights to any photos posted to their websites. If you have a grandchild or child that is an aspiring model, for example, you may want to check with them first before posting their photos. In general it's a good idea to be aware of each sites user agreements.
- Remember that anything you post to the Internet might be available to anyone, potentially forever and anywhere in the world. The exception is where sites provide for an option that "friends" (of yours) only" can view your content. The privacy settings vary site to site. Use your discretion when posting.

Facebook has several main practical uses:
- Communicating and keeping up on the latest that your friends and extended family are up to and saying. It helps you keep an online address book of sorts, and once your're "friends" in the Facebook community you can see what those Facebook friends are saying and posting on their individual Facebook pages. you can also send a note to your Facebook friends. This is particularly useful for staying in touch with friends and family in other states (for free).
- FINDING friends and family that you don't have other means of reaching. This is through the Facebook "search" function.
- Receiving special coupons and deals that are exclusively available through that business Facebook page (one you join their "friends" list).
- Receiving updates on the activities of your favorite local nonprofit organizations, community groups, church, etc. (those with Facebook profiles).
How to Sign Up & Create a Facebook Profile of Your Own
- Decide on a user name. You may not want to use your full name, depending on how easily you want to be found by others.
- Go to www.facebook.com (you can simply click on the link in blue)
- Complete the basic information. NOTE: It is recommended to NOT put your full real address in this information. For the most part, there is no reason you would need that other than to have any advertising you see on Facebook customized to be local to you (this can be accomplished by just using your real zip code) Click Sign Up".

"A Better Life" is informed and savvy. Search Engines can be a big help for finding local oxygen (or Grocery) delivery companies, reading the latest coverage of a team not covered in your Sunday paper, or learning what both the media and the public are saying about a topic to form you "own unbiased opinion."
You can use search engines to look up numbers, find new websites for recipes or even teach yourself about a new subject you always wanted to learn.
They say the more data you have a better, but when it comes to doing research on the Internet the trick is knowing how to fish for the right information amongst the ocean of ads, misinformed sources and doppelgangers of your intended search. This section can help you save time and grow rich in knowledge.
GENERAL TIPS
As you use search engines, you may want to keep the following in mind:
- How they work - Search engines scour the Internet and deliver links to other websites that the software believes you are most likely to be looking for - based on the terms you entered. The recommended links to other websites (aka "search results") are prioritized according to a variety of factors, from how often other people use those particular sites to how often each site is updated with new content.
- Avoiding ads disguised as objective search results/content - There's a reason Google doesn't have ads on its homepage (google.com). In addition to making it easier to look at when you first begin a search, it also makes the ads seem like part of your search results when they appear on all subsequent pages.
